History meets modern technology
It’s not every day we get to take part in a project where new technology gives a second life to a historic building. An interesting project is under way in Ventspils municipality ā an old inn that will in time become a guesthouse. The restoration of the building is still ongoing, but the foundations of the infrastructure are being laid now, and the guesthouse’s sewerage solution is one of the things that has to be ready before the rest of the work is finished.
For this site we installed an AUGUST AT-20 ā one of the most powerful models in the AUGUST biological treatment plant range, designed for sites with a significantly larger volume of wastewater than an ordinary private house.
Why is the AT-20 the right sewerage solution for a guesthouse?
For a private house with 4ā6 residents, an AT-6 or AT-8 model is usually enough, including the popular AT-8K version with a cone lid. But a guesthouse is different ā you have to plan for a variable and significantly larger load:
- guests arriving in groups or on holiday weekends;
- possibly a restaurant or cafƩ that also serves local residents;
- staff who are on site every day regardless of the number of guests.
The AUGUST AT-20 is a certified plant with a capacity of 18 PE (population equivalent), which means it can safely handle the kind of load expected in a medium-sized guesthouse or restaurant. In addition, like all AUGUST series plants, it is sized with a threefold safety margin ā the plant’s real capacity is three times the calculated daily load. This means that even in a busy season or during a short-term overload (such as a wedding or a larger event), the plant keeps working reliably without any drop in treatment quality.
What this means in practice
By choosing the right plant size at the design stage, the owner doesn’t have to revisit the issue once the guesthouse is running at full capacity. It’s one of those things best done once and done right: just like the roof or the foundations, the guesthouse’s sewerage solution is the part of the infrastructure that stays below the surface, yet everything else depends on it.
The AT-20, like the whole AUGUST AT series, is made of durable polypropylene with reinforcing rings for longevity, and its treatment efficiency is certified to the European standard EN 12566-3+A2 (PIA GmbH, Germany), with treatment results among the highest on the Latvian market.
Historic sites need a careful approach
Restoration projects for old buildings often involve special conditions: historic terrain, limited access for machinery, and the need to coordinate the work with other restoration processes. Each such site needs an individual approach from the very first consultation: choosing the right model, determining the installation option (above ground, partly buried, or under a road/yard surface) and close cooperation with the other contractors on the project.
This project is still ongoing, and we look forward to following its progress as the old inn gradually becomes a place where guests will one day enjoy Kurzeme hospitality, knowing that everything happening ābehind the scenesā works the way it should.
AT-20
- 7ā18 permanent residents
- Up to 2.7 m³ of treated household wastewater per day.
An eco-friendly and reliable solution for private houses and summer cottages. The AT-20 model is designed for 7 to 18 people and can treat up to 2.7 m³ of household wastewater per day. AUGUST plants deliver high treatment efficiency and low running costs, and come with a 10-year manufacturer warranty.
